AISI 4140 Bars have 0.38–0.43% carbon, 0.75–1.00% chromium, 0.15–0.25% molybdenum, and 0.75–1.00% manganese. Following quenching and tempering, 4140 provides tensile strength up to 1080 MPa and yield strength of over 850 MPa. It possesses good fatigue strength, good ductility, and moderate corrosion resistance. The toughness and hardness of the alloy recommend it for parts subject to high stress or cyclic load conditions. Its strength and machinability balance enables it to be shaped with ease and surface harden through induction or nitriding for increased wear resistance.
