AISI 4340 Alloy Steel Bars consist of about 0.40% carbon, 1.80% nickel, 0.80% chromium, and 0.25% molybdenum. All these elements impart hardenability, toughness, and resistance to wear. They have tensile strengths as high as 1080 MPa and yield strengths greater than 785 MPa after heat treatment. The alloy possesses very good fatigue strength, fracture toughness, and stress and impact load resistance. 4340 is commonly normalized, quenched, and tempered to achieve peak mechanical properties. It also provides excellent machinability and can be surface-hardened through induction or nitriding treatments.
