ASTM A242 Type 2 Corten Steel Sheets and Plates are produced using alloy steels with major constituents including copper (0.25–0.55%), chromium (0.50–1.25%), nickel (up to 0.65%), and phosphorus (0.04–0.10%). These provide high atmospheric corrosion resistance and strength to the steel. Mechanically, the plates provide a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa and tensile strength of 480–620 MPa. Exposed to weather, a protective patina forms on the surface, preventing painting.
