ASTM A709-50W Corten Steel is a low-alloy high-strength weathering steel that contains copper (0.25–0.40%), chromium (0.40–0.70%), nickel (up to 0.50%), and phosphorus (0.04–0.10%) as part of its composition. These features encourage the development of a protective oxide coating, which increases its resistance to atmospheric corrosion. The steel provides a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi (345 MPa) and tensile strength of 70–90 ksi (485–620 MPa), with adequate toughness in low-temperature conditions. It has excellent weldability and formability, and is suitable for applications where structural components are used under harsh environmental conditions.
